According to the Water Quality Association, “Iron is a metal that may be present in water in several oxidation states or physical forms. You must identify the correct form or oxidation state in order to select an effective treatment method. Iron in combination with organic compounds, such as tannins, will commonly be indicated by a yellow-colored tint to the water and typically requires ultra-filtration treatment. Iron in combination with bacteria (which tends to proliferate if left untreated) often requires a disinfection method as well. Iron bacteria in water typically has dark orange to black buildup or slime clumps and has a musty odor due to bacteria. Iron bacteria does not appear as fine particles.”
